Hi Braden and all! I can now confirm that indeed a bad mouse setup is causing all that keyboard trouble:
After adding a "CorePointer" Option to the Section about the USB-mouse and commenting out the PS2-mouse from the "ServerLayout" Section, the keyboard is working now.
