That's a judgement. I respect your opinion on this. Equally, I would suggest one should respect the upstream opinion on how they spend their development resources. I'm not part of digikam upstream so I have no special knowledge of this, but perhaps the existing usage of ffmpeg sufficed and they had other priorities to work on. > Some packages like mpd or mpv > have been fixed since a long time.
