I can confirm the behaviour reported in this bug (i.e. PATH hardcoded to /usr/local/bin /usr/bin /bin/usr/local/games /usr/games). I've furthermore tested the alternative implementation provided by Federico and that resolved any issues I had and results in the behaviour I desire and expect.
