Thanks for pointing that out. It is actually part of the Debian
nvidia-glx package which complements the non-free driver which is part
of nvidia-glx-source. However due to problems with the non-free driver
I'm currently using the nv driver which is part of Xorg. Uninstalling
nvidia-glx caused the problems to go away.
