In this case the icon nm-no-connection should be displayed. The wrong display is caused by the current Debian patch force-online-state-with-unmanaged-devices. If you replace nm-device-wired by nm-no-connection there, the applet behaves as expected. Debian GNU/Linux 10.0 Kernel 4.19.0-12-amd64
