You have to "ifconfig wlan0 up" the interface before you can see
anything with iwconfig. That's true for both the Debian version and the
zd1211.ath.cx version. And is partially a bug in the ZyDas driver.
All the messages you are seeing are perfectly normal and fine.

You are doing all that with the original zd1211.ath.cx driver, right?
I'd rather like you play with the zd1211-source generated one and try
to help me find out what's going on there with your firmware loading
problem. That'd help Debian and its users a lot more.
