Ok, it turned out to be an amarok bug. According to strace, amarok tried
to use the esd plugin only and said "unable to initialize ANY
audio-drivers" (emphasis mine) when it failed (I do not run esd). In
~/.kde/share/config/amarokrc I found this:

[Xine-Engine]
Output Plugin=esd

So the error message is misleading (it does not tell that the error is
just with a specific plugin, not with all plugins). What is much more
annoying is that in this case amarok does not let me select a different
Xine audio plugin from the GUI, which is bad.

I had to leave just when I found this all out so I had no time to test
if xine works if I use an other plugin instead of esd. I'll do so in the
evening.
