Yes, slixmpp is the way to go and I use it myself in sms4you. If I'm not mistaken, three packages depend on sleekxmpp: errbot, painintheapt, and kopano-presence. I can migrate painintheapt, but somebody would need to talk to maintainers (and upstream) of errbot and kopano. Probably sleekxmpp is used by many people for locally installed software, too, because of "The Definitive Guide". We should keep it around for some time.
