First of all, sorry for the horribly late response!

Things have improved since release 0.9, to the point that I consider it 
is tolerable nowadays.

Upcoming release 3 will have further improvements specifically for bulk 
transfers (but I don't know if Icedove makes use of that).

I dare close this as solved upstream.  Please reopen if you disagree.
