When I closed the lid (and handle-lid-switch was not inhibited), I got the reason in the logs: May 20 13:28:20 zira systemd-logind[786]: Lid closed. May 20 13:28:20 zira systemd-logind[786]: Suspending... But here, no reason was given, i.e. just the "Suspending..." line, which made me assume that it was logind's own decision.
