Yes, we have been a little bit lazy in error handling.

It doesn't matter - it reaches always me :-)

Why that? I would expect "ssh" as default when you're on
Debian. Additionally, could you, please, set

(setq tramp-verbose 9
      tramp-debug-buffer 't)

and then rerun the test? I would be interested in the buffers
*tramp/ssh...* and *debug tramp/ssh...*
