In case someone has somehow not realised in the almost 9 years since GTK 3.0 was released: GTK 2 is deprecated, will not receive further feature development, and only rarely receives bug fixes. 2.24.x is the last stable-branch, from which the most recent release was almost 2 years ago. In particular, GTK 2 is problematic on HiDPI displays and lacks native Wayland support, and these are not going to be fixed. Porting libraries and applications to GTK 3 (or even GTK 4, when it becomes available) is strongly recommended. Libraries will usually need a new SONAME when they move to GTK 3, for example libindicator.so.7 -> libindicator3.so.7 and libvte.so.9 -> libvte-2.91.so.0. There are currently no concrete plans to remove GTK 2 from Debian, but I'm sure it will become necessary one day, and I don't want anyone to be able to claim they weren't warned. At some point I might do a mass-bug-filing for packages that depend on GTK 2. smcv
