I've waited most of a year for a response and am considering pursuing
an NMU for this bug if it's not resolved by the time the other
blockers for smartparens have been resolved. I took a quick stab at
my proposed solution and will have to spend some time deducing what
style of installation you'd prefer.

Please consider taking the time to fix this so it doesn't come to that
:-)

Sincerely,
Nicholas

P.S. ideally it would be nice to see this package converted to use
dh-elpa, but I suspect you'd be against it, because it seems like
XEmacs support is a priority, and this conversion drops support for
XEmacs. Personally I believe that's a worthwhile compromise due to
all the time it saves from ongoing maintenance.
