Should not the kernel be doing the proper device shutdown? Why are we kludging this crap in userspace?
The only one who can really flush and idle all SATA, SCSI and PATA devices (which often sit behind hardware raid controllers) properly is the kernel. There is also the issue of flushing and checkpointing all still running MD devices (and other block devices).
