This bug is indeed more widely described in
http://bugzilla.gnome.org//show_bug.cgi?id=334758.
Freefont is not the only font set which is hit by the bug. DejaVu is also
hit.
The advice of pango authors here is that multi-script fonts are very likely
to be hit by this bug which is revealed by the latest pango.
