Package: apt Version: 1.9.1 Severity: wishlist Dear APT Maintainers,
When a repository is no longer available APT does tell that but gives little help to the user who the issue could be resolved: root@teaching-dolphin:~# apt update Ign:1 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu artful InRelease Ign:2 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu artful-security InRelease Err:3 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu artful-security Release 404 Not Found ... Reading package lists... Done ... E: The repository 'http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu artful-backports Release' does not have a Release file. N: Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default. N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details. root@teaching-dolphin:~# do-release-upgrade Checking for a new Ubuntu release Your Ubuntu release is not supported anymore. For upgrade information, please visit: http://www.ubuntu.com/releaseendoflife On the other hand if the user knows about do-release-upgrade or can update /etc/apt/sources.list manually the system can be upgraded to a still supported version or changed to use the new location of the repositories if they moved. Please consider printing hints in well known cases to help users getting out of the situation by either suggesting upgrading the the system or redirecting them to the new repository URLs.
