Dear Maintainer, I purged all mariadb files from my server (also /etc/mysql) and installed mariadb-server. The installation fails at the configure step of mysql-server and the database is not initialized. I created the directory /etc/mysql/conf.d (because included in the my.cnf) and reissued the installation and now everything works as expected. Therefore this bug does only occure on fresh installations, when upgrading from older versions this directory is most likely already existent.
