FWIW, actually gpg-agent is started on-demand from all tools requiring it. To explicitly start it "gpgconf --launch agent" can and should be used. Salam-Shalom, Werner -- Die Gedanken sind frei. Ausnahmen regelt ein Bundesgesetz.
