I know, and that's why I haven't changed the default in the patch
attached to this bug, only fixed the data loss if an existing installation
is already using a different STEAMDIR.
The default with the patch attached to this bug (#919467) continues to
be STEAMDIR = STEAMCONFIG = ~/.steam.
The new patch on #916303 follows/requires the one on #919467, and
additionally switches the default. It is not necessary to fix the data
loss (#919467).
