It works for me: I can delete group of messages marking them with
shift+up_arrow, or shift+down_arrow. I can delete messages from plain
treeview, or from threaded View. 
Maybe you have some locale specific settings here. Try, to reproduce this,
after changing to standrd locale:
$ export LC_ALL=C
$ sylpheed-claws-gtk2

Maybe something from your desktop enviroment is blocking this key-combination.
Try starting sylpheed-claws as standalone program in separate X session.
