I converted the suggestion into a PR on salsa to make it even easier. I built it in a (ubuntu) PPA [2] if you want to take a look and then also built a python3 enabled gpsd there to check the modified scons.
The other changes already in salsa update the VCS changes from alioth and look correct as well. Maybe Jörg isn't available these days since he didn't reply to Bernd since quite a while, so I wonder if this qualifies for a NMU?
