Yes, it's always not straightforward to build for multiple python
modules for anything that is not using setuptools…

If you change the build-dep it won't appear on the transition page in
times like this when there are multiple supported python versions, and
as such a rebuild of the package won't be tried. conversely, if the
software is not ready for the new version it will become insta-rc-buggy
as soon as the default is switched.
Please consider changing the build-dep until the patch for building
multiple versions is not ready.
