See my other message: this appears to be a problem with upgrades from the pre-ELPA versions of the ESS packages. Suggest installing ess 17.11-2 or -3 in your container, upgrading to the current version, and then see if you can reproduce? Might also be worth testing an upgrade from whatever version shipped in stretch. zw
