Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal

I wrote vmdebootstrap in 2011, originally. It has been maintained by
others since then, upstream and in Debian. I am now again the upstream
and Debian maintainer since last year.

As upstream, I am ashamed of having written such a lousy program. It
has a bad architecture that makes the software inflexible, difficult
to modify, hard to test, and it is not suitable for large number of
use cases. I admit a number of people have managed to make use of it.

There are better options now: I wrote vmdb2, and there is debos. FAI
is probably also better than vmdebootstrap.

As upstream, I want vmdebootstrap gone. This means it should be
removed from Debian as well. I don't want someone else to adopt it:
it's that bad. It is my birthday and my birthday wish to be rid of
this blight. (Whenever ftpmaster has time for it is fine: I just want
to make the request today.)

I've announced my intention to ask vmdebootstrap to be removed on
debian-cloud, in NEWS.Debian in the package, on debian-devel-announce,
and in my blog, at various points this year, so I feel I've given
ample warning. unstable still has two reverse dependencies: lava and
live-wrapper.
