If you provide a patch and promise to take care of the problems we don't expect, should they nevertheless occur, I won't object applying it. But I really can't understand why you keep discussing in *this* bug, instead of preparing a patch for, e.g., #354508 you submitted, or any other of the packages still using libkpathsea3.
