I've just been regularly prodding the various involved parties (this
particular debhelper backports has a bunch of other dependencies).

Right, it is. It's just me that dislike the sight of the trailing ~ in
my build-deps so I'd rather not have it.
And once the debhelper backport is updated it would also be completely
useless.
