Sorry didn't see your reply earlier.
That shows -
$ ls /etc/alternatives/desktop-background -lah
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 76 Mar 10 17:11
/etc/alternatives/desktop-background ->
/usr/share/desktop-base/active-theme/wallpaper/contents/images/1920x1080.svg
I am running mate 1.20.0 if that makes any difference although eog
and eom are able to load that file fine, there is no corruption in
/usr/share/desktop-base/active-theme/wallpaper/contents/images/1920x1080.svg

Cool. Look forward to see the changes. I would try out the changes
whenever you put the fixed packages . I would need to remove variety
from System > Preferences >
Startup applications > Variety Wallpaper changer although would have
liked an easier way to do that.
