I think your screenshot proves the opposite. "did not work at all" is
IMHO quite overstating. Except for background repainting it seems to
work normally in your screenshot.

Nevertheless I unfortunately can't reproduce the issue here, at least
not inside a Xephyr X server.
Which X server are you using? Is there any program occupying the
background, like e.g. Nautilus or xfishtank?
