The locations in which tex4ht searches for tex4ht.env is (in the order of merit!) Current directory (it could also be called .tex4ht) /usr/share/texm4/tex4ht/tex4ht.env (which is a link to /etc/tex4ht/tex4ht.env) Thus you could have your own tex4ht.env in the documentation directory and avoid the difficulties with the current /etc/tex4ht/tex4ht.env. Note: I am not trying to pass up the bug associated with tex4ht.env I am merely trying to prevent it from being a show-stopper :-) As I have ITA "tex4ht" this bug should eventually be fixed.
