I downloaded the latest source from https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome- online-accounts/, switched to the branch for version of gnome I am using (gnome-3-22) installed build dependencies with apt build-dep gnome-online-accounts, build & installed (run ./autogen.sh; make; sudo make install)
Then the problem went away, I was successfully able to add a facebook account in online-accounts. This suggests the problem will be resolved in a future release.
