Hi,
Looks like that the problem is related with libxft2.
Downgrading it to 2.1.7-1 did the trick and mozilla-mailnews
works again. I use [1]snapshot.debian.net to get the old
version.

Perhaps you could try it, if this solves the problem,
please, reassign the bug to libxft2 and merge it with #350113.
