I think (created the initial samba configs several years ago, so I don't
remember this for sure) I'm using that line because most of the machines
have both .1 and .254 IP from there subnet assigned to there ethernet
interface (DNS + GW IP), and I want Samba to use the .254 IP. I do use
this IP in the interfaces config line now, which also seems to do the
trick. Will omit socket address for now :-)
Based on the documentation, if this breaks your setup it still sounds like a
bug to me.

... so it's not a waste of time. I'm just glad we were able to confirm it
wasn't the fhs patch causing problems, since I really couldn't understand
how that was possible. :)
