This doesn't invalidate the bug, in that either this change should not happen (the default behavior should be the same after upgrade as before) or the fact of the change should be announced - with a pointer to where to find this information on how to revert it - at upgrade time, but it does seem to mean that my own problem is now resolved. Thanks for the recommendation. This is actually similar to what I'd found in my Web searching, but I was apparently going in the wrong direction; I thought this change had been due to hinting, etc., becoming *enabled* where it had before been turned off, whereas in fact it seems to have been the other way around. Hopefully the existence of this filed report will make it easier for other people to find the issue and this solution in the future, even if no change to the upgrade-time behavior is ever made. - -- Andrew J.
