Thanks for the solution! I copied the emacs24.desktop file to my home directory: $ cp /usr/share/applications/emacs24.desktop .local/share/applications and then updated the copy by changing the Exec line to Exec=env GDK_SCALE= /usr/bin/emacs24 %F This seems to work fine.
