the choice of default colors is obvious a contestable one, and there is no single right answer. I prefer it this way (I mostly use sm during talks, where the background tends to be bright). I think I’ll play the “I wrote this, so I make the call” and also the “Changing a default will upset a few people” card and not apply the patch. I recommend you to use the bash alias feature to make sm behave the way you prefer – just like people have been configuring their unix tools for decades.
