I haven't such problems with TB in stretch or jessie. Both versions are currently 45.8.0-3, we doesn't have TB 52.x ready for upload. Can you please start thunderbird from the cli by using some extra environment variables and check what's maybe blocking or not working? https://wiki.debian.org/Icedove#Debugging_Icedove_Activity Please substitute 'icedove' with 'thunderbird' if haven't installed the icedove package.
