Are you able to test patched packages in your environment? If so, and if 
you're still able to reproduce this issue, I wonder if you'd be willing 
to try this patch:

ftp://ftp.openldap.org/incoming/20170427_rtandy_call-sasl_client_init-in-global-init.patch
It's only a proof-of-concept, not a real solution, but it would tell us 
whether or not the issue you're experiencing is the same one I found.

I can provide patched binary packages if that would help.
