Hal doesn't mount anything, that's done by another program for example
gnome-volume-manager which in turn calls pmount. It can be the case that hal
doesn't detect the insertion of a usb device though.
Can you do the following test:
* Run udevmonitor and lshal --monitor, both should output information when you
plug in your usb stick.
+ In case that doesn't work restart the udev daemon and try again.
+ In case it (still) doesn't work, send a mail back and we should start
digging deeper :) Please include /etc/udev/rules.d/050_hal-plugdev.rules in
that.
+ In case it does work it's a problem of gvm or whatever you use to
automagically mount stuff. In that case lemme know and i'll give you some
hints on how you can debug tat stap.
