We need to deploy (and maintain) VMware tools on production VMs, which cannot have compiler and other build tools installed on them.
if you are not running ESX4, you won't need the dkms package at all and so you don't need a module-assistant friendly package. If you are still running ESX4 or you are using machines with vmxnet (not vmxnet3!) you should upgrade your systems.
