I just tried to reproduce the problem with two VMs running both a default GNOME stretch installation (using the X based session). Worked without problems. So it doesn't seem to be general problem, thus downgrading the severity. Are you, as Andreas suggested, using the GNOME on Wayland session? -- Why is it that all of the instruments seeking intelligent life in the universe are pointed away from Earth?
