I just found out that the log-in GUI controls were not shown since they were sent to another monitor that while powered on is showing the signal of another machine, most of the time. To notice, one needs to move the mouse and/or notice (and know the implications of) the absence of the gray bar on the top of the screen. Neither applied to me.
