* What led up to the situation? Upgraded linux-image-amd64 to above version. Sound no longer works. Attempts to shutdown/reboot machine via gui menus lock. Logging in on console and running reboot as root also locks. sysrq-s,u,b succeeds in rebooting machine. * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? dpkg to reinstall older kernel (4.8+77) selecting 4.8 in grub: sound and rebooting capabilities work with this kernel. selecting 4.9 in grub: reproduces symptoms. booting (4.9) without usb sound device connected: sound and rebooting work fine.
