Should work as well, but is harder to read (IMHO).
BTW, look at line 530:
jobs = (JOB **)xrealloc (jobs, (js.j_jobslots * sizeof (JOB *)));
for (j = i; j < js.j_jobslots; j++)
jobs[j] = (JOB *)NULL;
so perhaps, in analogy to the existing code, the best version would be
for(; j<nsize; j++)
nlist[j] = (JOB *)NULL;
