A check should maybe be added to verify that the icon specified in the .desktop file exists in the hicolor theme in png format. For example mutt sets the Icon key in its .desktop file but ships no .png file in the hicolor theme. With gnome-shell it fallback to the .xpm icon. (see: #854132) A check could also verify that a big enough icon for nowdays standards (48x48?) is provided.
