I recently updated my laptop, and since then, mate-power-manager does
not seem to work any more if I run it in my session. See transcript
below.

If I run it in `su -' it works (at least to set the brightness),
although I think it was the actual mate-power-manager process that put
an icon in my tray, and now that doesn't appear any more (I presume
because it has no access to my X session any more).

In this configuration (running it in `su -'), I do get notifications

I'm running:
  sysvinit as pid 1
  systemd-shim
  systemd-udevd
  systemd-logind
  vtwm as my window manager
trayer to hold my tray icons etc.

I'm afraid I don't really know how all this stuff is supposed to work.
I suspect I may be filing this bug against the wrong package.
xfce4-power-manager (which I also tried) seems to have similar
trouble.

Hints as to where to look (or reassignment of this bug) would be very
welcome.

This should not be the case at all. Issue is under investigation, I raised severity, because this needs to be addressed for stretch.
