I've tried but sadly I still can't connect. Note: my system has a on/off
switch (ie, possibly not software-enabled but pure switch).
rfkill *always* shows:
# rfkill list
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
no matter in which position the switch is, the wpa_supplicant version, etc.

I looked into them. I can't say for sure they are the same issue, plus I have
been using those versions for sure, as I update this machine at least twice
per week except on rare cases.
