Okay, sarge indeed uses /dev/random:
9576 access("/dev/random", R_OK) = 0
9576 access("/dev/urandom", R_OK) = 0
9576 open("/dev/random", O_RDONLY) = 8
I'm going to do a bit of source code archeology to find out why.
