This can be done with dkms since 2.2.0.3-5 [1][2][3].

To be honest, I removed tp-smapi-source from Debian, because when I
wanted to touch it, I did not undestand what I was doing 5 years ago.

If you really want tp-smapi-source back and the dkms version is not
enough for your needs, I would ask you to review the diff [4] and see if
there is a way to add it back without adding 200 lines of code.
I will happily move tp-smapi to collab-maint and invite you then :)
