I don't think it's a matter of the remote system since there is still network traffic after mc stops to write to disk.

Do you have more info about the remote system ?

Local and remote systems are Debian Sarge boxes running 2.6.14/2.6.15 kernels on XFS filesystem. Work with these large files localy is no problem at all.
