It looks to me as though gscan2pdf is already catching the errors properly. However, it doesn't look as though after the upgrade to v1.5.2, you have tried to use the "Don't show this message again" tick box on the message dialog. Please reproduce the problem, but tick the "Don't show this message again" tick box before clicking the close button. Then reproduce the problem again, and you should find the dialogue box does not appear.
